Revealed: 10 terrible design trends that will stop you from selling your house

If you’re trying to sell your house, you’ll know there are some things you can do to make it more inviting to buyers. We’ve all heard the one about sticking something in the oven to bake, or putting out vases of freshly cut flowers – and this kind of tactic definitely helps!

But there are plenty of interior design mistakes that can put buyers off  – ones that can’t be solved with a simple plump of the cushions. Read on to discover the ten worst culprits for knocking value off your property, and find out what you can do to avoid tackling them.

Top ten interior design mistakes

  1. Wood panelling

According to a Census survey of 2,000 people, old fashioned wood panelling takes the number one spot for turning buyers off. In fact, a massive 46% said they wouldn’t buy a property if it still had panelling. Sadly, it’s not an easy fix when you want to sell your home fast.

  1. Avocado bathroom suites

While avocado may be in vogue on millennial brunch menus, in the bathroom it’s a definite no-no. You won’t sell your home fast with a sickly green suite – and it could knock almost £5,000 off a property’s value, with 71% of buyers saying it would be the first thing to go.

  1. Built-in bars

This classic 70s throwback won’t help you sell your house: 41% of buyers said they wouldn’t buy a house with a built-in bar.

  1. Woodchip

Getting woodchip off your walls is no mean feat: unless you have plenty of spare time to steam it off and remove it, more than 40% of buyers won’t look twice.

  1. Artex ceilings

Re-plastering a ceiling that’s been covered with those signature swirls is a big job, but if you don’t do it? You’ll be knocking off thousands of pounds in value of your home – if you can sell it all.

  1. Patterned carpets

Bold coloured patterned carpets might have been popular a few decades ago, but they’re distinctly unfashionable now. Ripping them out and replacing them with hardwood floors will certainly help your home sell faster – but do you have the time?

  1. Textured wallpaper

It’s hard to get a sleek modern look when your walls are covered in textured wallpaper – it’s such a big turnoff that 34% of buyers would walk away at the sight.

  1. Crazy paving

There was a time it didn’t seem so mad – it’s a common (outdated) feature in many homes. But if you want to sell your house fast, you’d be wise to rip it up and replace it with something a little less… crazy.

  1. Brick fireplaces

Original features will add instant value: fake brick fireplaces will not.

  1. Built-in wardrobes over the bed

Want to make your bedroom look cramped and enclosed? A built-in wardrobe above the bed will do that for you – and make your home hard to sell in the process.

Sell your house to us

While this list of design errors might put off potential buyers coming round for viewings and knock down the value of your home, they don’t deter our experts.

No amount of artex ceiling will stop us making you an offer, so if you’re time pressed, can’t afford to make the changes or have inherited a house with a long list of design-woes, selling your house for cash is the way forward.

Especially if you’re sensitive about that retro floral carpet (only) you love.
